Officiel : Lionel Messi prend sa retraite internationale
Lionel Messi definitively closes the Argentine chapter. Twenty-one years, 207 caps and a World Cup after his debut, an era comes to an end.
Lionel Messi will no longer wear the Argentina jersey. Two months after the 2026 World Cup final loss to Spain, the Albiceleste captain announced his international retirement on Monday in a lengthy letter. "After careful consideration, I wish to announce to you all that I am retiring from international football," he wrote, describing it as "a painful decision" but also expressing his conviction that "the time has come."
The story inevitably brings to mind 2016. After another Copa América final defeat against Chile, Messi had already announced his retirement from the national team before returning a few weeks later. This time, at 39, the context is radically different. The Argentinian is coming off a sixth World Cup appearance, which ended in a defeat after extra time against Spain, and nothing suggests another change of heart.
The recent death of his father, Jorge, adds a personal dimension to this decision. His father and agent, a central figure throughout his career, died on August 8th after a long illness. Messi later acknowledged going through a period of profound self-doubt. It's impossible to say for sure that this tragedy caused his retirement, but it certainly accompanied the final weeks of reflection for a player who had already begun writing his letter after the final.
Messi leaves the national team with staggering statistics: 207 caps and 125 goals, two Argentine records. He will have played in six World Cups and won the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, as well as the 2022 Finalissima. His last tournament will have been another monumental one, with eight goals at the 2026 World Cup and a third World Cup final played as captain.
His international career has seen it all: criticism, lost finals, his first retirement, and then complete reconciliation with his country. In 2022, Messi finally gave Argentina the third star they had been waiting for since Maradona. Four years later, he falls just minutes short of a historic double, but his legacy remains untarnished. This time, he leaves neither frustrated nor misunderstood. He departs the Albiceleste as an absolute legend, having written the final chapter of his own story.
