Ballon d'Or 2026: Lamine Yamal puts his disappointment into perspective and makes a promise

Once again denied the Ballon d'Or, Lamine Yamal prefers to look to the future. Despite his disappointment after Harry Kane's triumph, the young FC Barcelona prodigy remains confident and asserts that his time will come.

Lamine Yamal will have to wait a little longer before lifting the Ballon d'Or. While he hoped to win football's most prestigious individual award, the FC Barcelona winger finished behind Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé in the 2026 edition. This is another disappointment for the Spanish international, who had already missed out on the prize last year to Ousmane Dembélé.

At just 19 years old, the young Spanish talent of Moroccan descent can nevertheless find solace in a historic distinction. He won the Kopa Trophy for the third consecutive year, awarded to the best player under 21. But this latest accolade was not enough to erase his frustration at seeing the Ballon d'Or slip through his fingers once again.

The past few days have been particularly difficult for the Barcelona player. After Barça's defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (2-4) in the Champions League, he also witnessed his team's loss against Real Madrid (1-2) in El Clásico. The Ballon d'Or verdict added another disappointment to this string of setbacks.

Lamine Yamal remains confident in his future

Visibly affected by the Ballon d'Or verdict, Lamine Yamal received support from his president, Joan Laporta. The Catalan executive defended his player's candidacy, believing that his individual qualities and titles fully justified a victory.

“We believe Lamine Yamal deserves the Ballon d’Or for his individual talent and for the titles won. He is very enthusiastic and we are truly sorry for him,” he said, while acknowledging that the voting process remained a mystery to the club.

After remaining silent following the ceremony, the young striker finally reacted on Instagram. Far from giving in to discouragement, he chose to focus on patience and perseverance. "It will come, good things take time. I have faith in the path I am forging. Without rushing, with enthusiasm, and with the certainty that my time will come one day," he wrote.

The Spaniard also congratulated the winners before refocusing his attention on FC Barcelona's collective goals. "I'm refocusing on the essentials: ensuring that FC Barcelona returns to winning ways," he added.  

Despite this latest setback, Lamine Yamal intends to continue his progress without rushing things. The Catalan prodigy is convinced that his performances will eventually allow him to win the coveted trophy. Now he just needs to transform this disappointment into motivation to come back stronger on the pitch.
