After a season marked by impressive club performances and a continental title with Senegal, Pape Gueye is embracing his ambitions for the African Ballon d'Or. The Villarreal midfielder believes he has a strong case to make.

Awarded the title of Best African Player in La Liga and hero of Senegal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) by scoring the only goal of the match, Pape Guèye is a serious contender for the African Ballon d'Or.

"When you come off a season like this where you're named Best African Player in La Liga, you win the AFCON on the field, you score the goal in the final... Bam, you're inevitably a candidate for the African Ballon d'Or. Absolutely..." said the Villarreal player on Canal+'s "Talents d'Afrique" program.

"I'm not someone who's going to sell out. I think I've done quite a few good things. I scored at important moments for my country, for the history of my country," he added.

“Now, it’s not up to me to vote, we’ll see. But at the beginning of the season, I always note down my objectives: goals, assists, games played, team and individual trophies. And it’s true that the African Ballon d’Or was one of my objectives,” he confided.
