Basket à Ziguinchor : la Coupe du Maire, les rebonds d'une compétition
The city of Ziguinchor kicked off the second edition of the Mayor's Basketball Cup, a competition bringing together nine men's teams and four women's teams. Beyond the sporting aspect, this initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Djibril Sonko, aims to promote basketball, strengthen the competitiveness of local clubs, and stimulate a genuine economic dynamic around the sport. The issue of infrastructure, essential to the development of the sport, was also a central topic of discussion.
In a festive and passionate atmosphere, marked by strong support from regional basketball stakeholders, the Mayor's Cup basketball tournament officially opened in Ziguinchor. For this second edition, the municipality reaffirms its commitment to establishing this competition as a permanent fixture on the local sporting calendar, with the ambition of making it a major event in Senegalese basketball.
According to the mayor of Ziguinchor, Djibril Sonko, this competition stems from a simple conviction: to offer the population quality sporting events while creating more opportunities for young athletes. "We want to allow people to travel on weekends to attend sporting events, but also give young people the opportunity to play and improve through regular competition," he explained.
The mayor also praised the level of organization of this second edition. Commending the efforts of the committee responsible for implementing the event, he indicated that this initiative is part of a broader vision aimed at increasing local competitions in order to better support young people.
For Djibril Sonko, sport is not merely a leisure activity or a tool for social cohesion. It also represents an economic sector capable of generating opportunities for the population. Through this Mayor's Cup, the municipality seeks to create a movement around sport that also benefits small businesses and other economic actors present at the events.
"The idea is to create a sports economy. Vendors, traders and all those involved in these events can also benefit from this dynamic," he stressed.
In a region renowned for its sporting potential, this competition is also seen as a valuable preparation tool for participating clubs before the resumption of national championships. The mayor believes that the accumulation of matches will allow local teams to improve their level of play, their physical condition, and their competitiveness against other teams in the country.
He thus encouraged the basketball players to consider this competition as an important step in their development. "This cup should allow them to reach the same level and better compete with the other teams in Senegal," he insisted.
The issue of sports infrastructure, regularly raised by basketball stakeholders, was not ignored during the ceremony. Aware of the shortcomings hindering the sport's development, the mayor reaffirmed the municipality's commitment to progressively improving the city's sports facilities.
Discussions are already underway with the Regional Basketball League to renovate and modernize several playing areas. The project to cover the basketball court at the Jules-François-Bocandé stadium is among the priorities identified to provide athletes with better training and competition conditions.
At the same time, the municipality intends to continue its investments in other sports infrastructure, notably with the announced works at the Jules-François-Bocandé stadium.
Mamadou Lamine Saul Sidibé, President of the Ziguinchor Regional Basketball League, expressed his complete satisfaction with the commitment shown by the city council to the sport. He believes that organizing the Mayor's Cup is a landmark moment for regional basketball.
He praised the initiative, which he considers innovative and full of hope for young basketball players in the region. "We often organize championships and finals, but seeing a local authority officially launch a tournament of this scale is a powerful act," he stated.
The regional basketball official, clearly enthusiastic, thanked the municipality for its continued support and involvement in the sport's development. He believes this support reflects a genuine political commitment to making sport a tool for youth development and empowerment.
Through this competition, which brings together thirteen teams—nine boys' and four girls'—Ziguinchor aims to solidify its position as a basketball hub. Between encouraging sports participation, supporting clubs, promoting women's sports, and the promised improvements to infrastructure, the Mayor's Cup has emerged as a true catalyst for the sporting ambitions of the southern capital.
