Coupe du monde 2026 : la Suisse accrochée par le Qatar
Switzerland, who were in control against Qatar for much of the match, thought they had secured their first victory in this 2026 World Cup. But a goal from Boualem Khoukhi in added time allowed the Qataris to snatch a draw (1-1) and leave with a valuable point.
A disappointing start for the Swiss national team. Facing Qatar, the Nati were held to a 1-1 draw. Dominating from the outset, the Swiss quickly opened the scoring thanks to a penalty converted by Breel Embolo in the 17th minute. Controlling possession and superior in open play, Granit Xhaka and his teammates created several opportunities to extend their lead, but Qatari goalkeeper Mahmud Ibrahim Abunada distinguished himself with a series of crucial saves.
In the second half, both teams created several clear chances but lacked clinical finishing. Just when they seemed headed for victory, the Swiss ultimately let the three points slip away in the dying moments of the match.
Following a well-constructed attack down the left flank, Qatari captain Boualem Khoukhi headed home an unstoppable effort that gave Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel no chance (90+4'). Thanks to this goal from the Algerian-born defender, Qatar secured a valuable draw before facing Canada in their second match.
