England will indeed be present at the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions overcame a valiant DR Congo team (2-1), at the end of a match that was undecided for a long time.
The task was not easy for Thomas Tuchel's men, however. Facing a well-organized Congolese side, the English were caught off guard early in the match. Taking advantage of a deflection from Noah Sadiki, Brian Cipenga beat Jordan Pickford to open the scoring in the 7th minute.
Stung into action, England quickly responded with a flurry of attacks. But the Three Lions were thwarted by an imperious Dimitry Mpasi, who made several crucial saves. Just before halftime, DR Congo even came close to doubling their lead. Yoane Wissa, well-positioned, saw his shot strike the post (43rd minute).
After returning from the locker room, the English increased the pressure on the Congolese goal. And through sheer persistence, they finally found a way through. In the 75th minute, Harry Kane, set up perfectly by Anthony Gordon, equalized with an unstoppable header.
Physically affected and now under pressure, the Congolese finally succumbed in the final minutes to the inevitable Harry Kane with a precise shot from the edge of the box in the 86th minute.
With this brace from their captain, England eliminated DR Congo (2-1) and secured their place in the round of 16.
