Derby mancunien : L'organe d’arbitrage reconnaît son erreur et s’excuse auprès des Red Devils
The Manchester derby continues to generate discussion. Beaten 1-0 by Manchester City on Sunday in the Premier League, Manchester United have serious regrets after Erling Haaland's goal was allowed to stand.
According to Pro Ref, the body responsible for refereeing in England, this decision should not have stood. Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position during the play. Even though he didn't touch the ball, his position could have influenced the flow of the game and hindered a Manchester United player's reading of the play. This is a factor that VAR apparently failed to adequately consider.
In a statement released Sunday evening, Pro Ref acknowledged an error in judgment and apologized to Manchester United. "It has been established that Enzo Fernandez did not touch the ball. However, in this instance, VAR failed to consider the likely impact of his position and should have recommended a pitch-side review."
The governing body also indicated that it had directly contacted Manchester United to acknowledge its error. "We contacted Manchester United on Sunday evening to acknowledge what we consider to be an error of judgment. The incident will be subject to further review," it stated.
