Éliminatoires Ligue des champions UEFA : Lyon de Moussa Niakhaté tombe de haut
Olympique Lyonnais, featuring Senegalese center-back Moussa Niakhaté, will not be participating in the Champions League group stage. A week after returning from Istanbul with a respectable 1-1 draw against Fenerbahçe, Lyon suffered a major setback at home.
Despite the support of their fans at Groupama Stadium, Lyon lost 2-1 to the Turkish club. Fenerbahçe quickly took control thanks to Vedat Muriqi, who opened the scoring in the 24th minute before Archie Brown doubled the lead in the 28th.
In the second half, spurred on by their fans, Lyon tried to get back into the game. A goal from Malick Fofana allowed his team to reduce the deficit in the 61st minute. Four minutes later, Loïs Openda thought he had equalized, but his goal was disallowed after a VAR review (65th minute). Kaïs Boudache also thought he had equalized for Lyon in the 71st minute, but his goal was also cancelled after consultation with VAR.
In the final twenty minutes, despite intense attacking pressure, Lyon were unable to equalize. With this away victory, Fenerbahçe secured their qualification for the Champions League group stage.
For Olympique Lyonnais and their Senegalese defender Moussa Niakhaté, this elimination is a major disappointment.
