Entre accusations d'abandon et riposte de la Fédération : le basket féminin sénégalais explose
The women's Olympic pre-qualifying tournament for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, held in Guadalajara, Mexico, descended into scandal. Following the elimination of the Senegalese women's basketball team, the Lionesses, several players were stranded there due to a lack of transportation. This intolerable situation prompted international player Madjiguène Sène to break her silence and denounce the management of the Senegalese Basketball Federation (FSBB).
In a statement published on social media, the basketball player didn't mince words, detailing the shortcomings of the federation regarding the care of athletes: "For our meals, the Federation gave us 50,000 FCFA per Wave transfer so we could buy food. What can you buy with 76 dollars? I'm telling you, some players didn't even have sanitary napkins, even though some were menstruating," denounced the 31-year-old basketball player.
She adds: “To calm the situation, we are being sent another 143,000 FCFA, or $250 per Wave, so we can buy towels and toothbrushes. Khadija Faye and I took care of feeding the young basketball player Nogaye Diagne. In tears, she had to call her club president to help her get food. I myself had to call my husband to send me $200 to buy food.”
A week without training
Beyond the issues of catering and hygiene, Madjiguène Sène also points to a major logistical disorganization that deprived the team of any preparation for several days: “We went a week without training, while traveling back and forth between Morocco and Senegal. Their only reason? We didn't have Schengen visas. Despite this, we are being told not to speak out, and the Federation wants to turn us against the public.”
The Federation's version
In a press release dated August 23, 2026, the FSBB (Senegalese Basketball Federation) provided its version of events. It stated that the first group of the delegation, which arrived in Mexico via the Schengen Area, returned to Dakar on Sunday, August 23, on an Air France flight, while the second group, transiting via the Casablanca-São Paulo route, could not leave Mexico until August 24, arriving in Dakar on August 26. According to the Federation, this date perfectly corresponds to the originally planned schedule, "the day after the end of the tournament," and "therefore, no delays were recorded."
Regarding accommodation, the FSBB (Swiss Basketball Federation) states that it housed the delegation in a five-star hotel near Mexico City airport and provided financial assistance to players affected by baggage delays for the purchase of personal belongings while awaiting delivery. The Federation also specifies that it ensured players were accommodated in hotels or VIP lounges during long layovers.
