FIFA : la Fédération française de football prépare un mauvais coup à Infantino
Gianni Infantino's camp is fracturing as the FIFA presidential election approaches. The Italian-Swiss leader, a candidate for another term at the head of the world governing body, is expected to lose a significant supporter in Europe: the French Football Federation (FFF).
According to reports from AFP, the French Football Federation is expected to officially announce its opposition to Infantino's re-election on Wednesday. This position should be announced following the meeting of its executive committee, scheduled for later that afternoon.
This decision comes amid growing tensions between several European federations and the FIFA president. The French Football Federation (FFF) reportedly disapproved of the ultimately abandoned plan to open up part of the World Cup's capital to private investors.
France has thus joined several other European federations that have already distanced themselves from Gianni Infantino. Sweden, Scotland, Italy, and Belgium have also expressed their opposition to the FIFA president.
A former close collaborator of Michel Platini at UEFA, Infantino had managed to consolidate his power since his arrival at the FIFA presidency in 2016. But with a new election approaching, criticism is mounting and several European supporters are now beginning to abandon him.
The French Federation's disavowal is therefore another blow for the outgoing president, who will have to rely on his supporters outside Europe to consolidate his position and prepare for his re-election.
