FIFA : la France tourne définitivement le dos à Gianni Infantino
The French Football Federation (FFF) has officially decided to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino in his bid for re-election as FIFA president. This decision marks a new stage in the European protest against the Italian-Swiss leader, just months before the next election.
The divorce between the French Football Federation (FFF) and Gianni Infantino is now complete. Meeting in executive committee this Thursday, the French body formally withdrew its support for the FIFA president, who is running for re-election in the elections scheduled for March 2027.
This decision comes after several weeks of tension surrounding FIFA's governance. According to L'Équipe, the ultimately abandoned plan to allow private funds to acquire stakes in World Cup broadcasting rights contributed to accelerating the disagreement between Infantino and several European federations.
With this decision, France officially joins the ranks of those opposing the FIFA president. Around ten European federations have already distanced themselves, including England and Italy. Others could follow suit in the coming weeks.
The French Football Federation (FFF) is thus moving closer to the position defended by UEFA and its president, Aleksander Čeferin, who is increasingly critical of Gianni Infantino's leadership. The European front hostile to the Italian-Swiss leader therefore appears to be continuing to grow.
For Gianni Infantino, this loss of French support represents another political setback as the election approaches. The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027, during a congress to be held in Rabat, Morocco.
