FIFA : Samuel Eto’o assume son soutien à Gianni Infantino et répond aux critiques
With the FIFA presidential election just months away, scheduled for March 2027, Samuel Eto'o has made his choice clear. The president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) continues to support Gianni Infantino and refuses to back down, despite the numerous criticisms currently surrounding the Italian-Swiss leader.
In an interview with L'Équipe, the former captain of the Indomitable Lions explained the reasons for his support. He believes that the perception of FIFA's governance cannot be the same in Africa and Europe, particularly due to the enormous differences in resources between federations.
“We will never be able to have the same perception of things,” Eto’o believes, highlighting the financial situation of many African federations. According to him, some of them have extremely limited budgets and cannot compete with the major footballing nations.
To justify his choice, Samuel Eto'o cites in particular the impact of the FIFA Forward program. According to the Cameroonian official, this FIFA funding mechanism has supported several projects related to the development of football on the continent.
Cameroon, in particular, benefited from these investments to finance certain infrastructure projects for its federation. For Eto'o, this aid represents a significant opportunity for African countries, which have far more limited resources than the major powers of world football.
"Today, President Infantino is giving Africans the opportunity to dream of developing football," he says.
The former FC Barcelona striker believes that the concrete results achieved by African federations must be taken into account when evaluating the record of the FIFA president.
Samuel Eto'o was also asked about the controversial project led by Gianni Infantino to open up some of the World Cup's commercial rights to private investors. The project, which had sparked numerous reactions, was ultimately abandoned.
However, the president of FECAFOOT believes this issue should not be dictated by a single confederation. He maintains that FIFA's major policy directions must be discussed and decided collectively by all 211 member federations.
Eto'o is particularly critical of UEFA's influence in current debates surrounding the governance of world football.
"UEFA is an important confederation for FIFA, it contributes enormously to football, but it should not be considered the only or the most important confederation," he explains.
A position that remains unchanged
While several voices, including on the African continent, have expressed reservations about Gianni Infantino, Samuel Eto'o does not seem to want to change course.
The Cameroonian acknowledges that the FIFA president can defend his own interests, but believes that the funding granted to the less powerful federations remains an essential element of his record.
For Eto'o, the development of football necessarily requires sufficient financial resources. "If we don't have money, we cannot develop football," he reminds us.
The March 2027 election could therefore lead to a major battle over the governance of world football. But whatever the outcome of the vote, Samuel Eto'o already knows which side he will be on.
"I will support him," the FECAFOOT president stated unequivocally.
