Foot: la Fédération néerlandaise appelle à un sommet sur l'avenir de la FIFA à Amsterdam sans Infantino
The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) called on Sunday for an international summit to be held in Amsterdam, without Gianni Infantino, to discuss a deep reform of FIFA's governance.
In a statement, the KNVB asserts that the world body needs "new leadership from 2027 onwards", while stressing that a change of president will not be enough.
The federation, which had supported Infantino during his last re-election in 2023, says it based its support at the time on commitments to good governance, human rights, sustainability and international cooperation.
"We have now reached a point where our trust is lost," she wrote, denouncing an excessive concentration of power around the president and an insufficient separation between him and the FIFA administration.
The KNVB believes that the process surrounding the now-withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise project constituted a "turning point" in its relationship with Infantino.
She is now calling for a broader debate on the very structure of FIFA before addressing the question of its future leader.
"First, we need to determine what type of FIFA international football needs," she emphasizes.
The federation is advocating for a "strong and credible" organization, with enhanced governance, increased transparency and independent control.
She wants human rights, sustainability and the fight against racism and discrimination to become central elements of FIFA's decisions, and for the organization to reinvest a larger share of its revenue in the development of world football.
To launch this discussion, the KNVB proposes to host a summit in Amsterdam bringing together national federations and confederations from all continents.
"As a founding member of FIFA, we have a special responsibility," she says, adding that she wants to act "as a full-fledged player in the international football community."
The Dutch Federation summarizes its approach in two steps: "first define the FIFA we want, then identify the leadership capable of implementing it".
When contacted by AFP, UEFA indicated that it did not want to "comment on correspondence that was intended to be private", adding: "we have a long-standing and productive working relationship with the KNVB, which we greatly value".
