Football: Mattéo Guendouzi suspended for 4 matches, two of which are firm, for insults during Lyon-Fenerbahçe

UEFA has handed Fenerbahçe's French international Mattéo Guendouzi a four-match suspension, two of which are firm, for "insults" uttered during the Champions League play-off second leg in Lyon at the end of August.

Guendouzi "is suspended for a total of four UEFA competition matches for which he would have been eligible, for insulting people present at the match, provoking spectators and breaching fundamental rules of good conduct," UEFA announced in a decision made public Friday evening.

"The suspension of two of these matches is subject to a one-year probationary period beginning on the day of this decision," the body continued in a statement.

Guendouzi, also fined €50,000, was found guilty of, among other things, giving the middle finger to Lyon supporters and of provocations that led to a brawl after the match. The day after the game, he claimed he had "done nothing wrong," emphasizing that he had been subjected to a barrage of insults from Lyon fans.

His English teammate Mason Greenwood was given a one-match suspended sentence and fined 30,000 euros for "breach of fundamental rules of good conduct".

Greenwood, also a former Marseille player, joined Guendouzi in taunting the Lyon supporters after the match, won by Fenerbahçe (2-1) and resulting in elimination for OL.

Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira, who provoked a scuffle before Guendouzi returned to the locker room, is suspended for 5 matches, three of which are firm.

UEFA also imposed heavy fines on both clubs: 108,500 euros for Lyon and 95,000 euros for the Turkish club.

Guendouzi, as is often the case, was the trigger for the problems at the end of the OL - Fenerbahçe match! 🤬
