Immersion : À Matam, la Fouta Basketball Academy forme les citoyens de demain

Supported by the Senegal Youth Consortium (CJS) as part of the Youth and Citizenship project , supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), the Fouta Basketball Academy is a youth association that uses sport as a powerful engine for education, solidarity and territorial development.

Through the practice of basketball, the organization goes beyond mere on-court performance. It offers young people comprehensive support combining educational activities, civic engagement, awareness sessions, and spaces for dialogue around the major issues that shape their daily lives.

A civic connection that extends beyond the field

During their recent training camp in Matam, the players participated in a rich program of activities outside of training. Film screenings, workshops, educational talks, and interactive exchanges with coaches punctuated the young basketball players' stay.

For the association's leaders, the main objective lies in the personal development of its participants. Basketball thus serves as an ideal vehicle for instilling fundamental values such as discipline, respect, mutual support, and community spirit. An example of this community commitment is the organization of a shared lunch with talibé children, offering the youngsters a concrete opportunity to step outside the strictly sporting context and cultivate empathy and social solidarity.

A community synergy that appeals to families

This annual camp brings together young people from all over Fouta, united by a shared passion for sport and a common desire to learn. Campers, coaches, and leaders come together in a unifying environment where sport serves as a springboard to other civic learning experiences.

This initiative has been welcomed by parents, who are delighted to see their children combining athletic discipline, civic education, and personal development. In Matam, the Fouta Basketball Academy brilliantly demonstrates that behind every bounce of the ball, social cohesion, team spirit, and the active citizenship of tomorrow are being built.
