«J’ai dû payer à manger aux filles» : le calvaire de quatre Lionnes du basket bloquées au Mexique
Double blow. After Senegal's elimination from the race for the 2028 Olympic women's basketball tournament, four Lionesses were stuck in Mexico for the pre-qualifying tournament, where national coach Cheikh Sarr's team suffered three defeats in as many games. These players are Dioma Kane, Nogaye Diagne, Sabou Guèye, and Madjiguène Sène.
They were unable to travel with the rest of the delegation due to ticket and visa issues.
L'Observateur reports that it was Madjiguène Sène who raised the alarm, promptly delivering a powerful dunk over the heads of her managers. "Maybe I'm not the player who will win you games by scoring 15 to 20 points, but I don't care," she asserted in a live video picked up by the newspaper of the Groupe Futurs Médias.
The Lionesses' pivot player continued: "The management should have had the decency to remain silent rather than trying to negotiate, find alibis, or undermine the players' standing with the public. At the airport, the coaches were powerless in the face of the situation; they are not responsible. I myself had to pay out of my own pocket to buy food for the girls. It was only later that we received 200,000 CFA francs via Wave, or 50,000 per person."
Madjiguène Sène went further: “Some girls arrived here without underwear. We had to go around to the shops in Mexico to buy clothes. It was after that that we were sent 143,000 CFA francs via Wave to buy suitcases. But the problem was how to withdraw this money here; the total represents about 250 dollars.”
Worse still, according to the Lioness, Cheikh Sarr's team missed a week of training. Madjiguène Sène reveals that she and her teammates were "shuttled between Morocco and Senegal, under the pretext that we play in Senegal and don't have Schengen visas. Which is false because I play in Arab countries and another player came from the United States."
In a statement reported by L'Observateur, the Senegalese Basketball Federation (FSBB) dismissed accusations of incompetence and failure to assist Lionnes in distress.
