JO-2036: sept pays potentiellement candidats à l'organisation, dont l'Inde et le Qatar
Seven countries have expressed their desire to bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, including India, Qatar and South Africa, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Tuesday, with the deadline for submitting a bid set for the end of October.
Germany, Hungary, South Korea and Turkey also have a "declared interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games", the body added in its statement.
The Lausanne-based organization reminds everyone that October 31, 2026, is the deadline for submitting applications. However, according to a source close to the matter, it does not expect to see new applicants emerge in such a short timeframe, given the technical complexity of the applications.
Details of the cities that would be candidates have not been revealed.
The IOC is due to designate the host of these Games in mid-2029, with a different procedure than that used for the 2030, 2032 and 2034 Games, it announced in June.
The awarding of the 2036 Olympic Games will be the first major decision of the Kirsty Coventry era, elected in March 2025 as IOC president. It is all the more anticipated as it could award the Games to a country that has never hosted the Olympics, such as India, which would be a first since the 2016 Rio Games.
According to the planned schedule, the IOC will designate in December 2028 one or more "preferred hosts", who will have to provide a series of guarantees, and then a decision will be made in mid-2029.
The 2030 edition in the French Alps, 2032 in Brisbane and 2034 in Utah were awarded six, eleven and ten years in advance respectively, a variability due to a very flexible, largely confidential procedure, where the IOC session only intervened at the end of the chain to endorse the choice of the executive committee.
From now on, the "continuous dialogue" with potentially interested hosts will continue behind closed doors, but will be followed from March 2027 by a "strategic dialogue" with an initial selection of candidates, evaluated more closely and visited by the future host commission, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, president of this permanent body of the IOC, explained in June.
India dreams of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games to assert its status as a major power to the world. In its letter of intent sent to the IOC in October 2024, the Indian committee highlighted the country's "growing importance on the world stage" and its status as "the only major economy not to have yet hosted the Games."
Since coming to power in 2014, Narendra Modi, the Hindu ultranationalist Prime Minister, has been constantly pushing to impose his country on the world stage, particularly against rival China, which has already hosted the Olympics twice.
Qatar, a wealthy gas-rich state, aims to become "the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games," and indicated last year that it already had "95% of the necessary sports infrastructure."
As for Turkey, Istanbul had been beaten in the race for the 2020 Summer Games, finishing second to Tokyo.
Germany, for its part, announced at the end of September that it had chosen Munich to defend its chances of hosting the Olympics in 2036, 2040 or 2044. The country has already hosted three editions of the Olympic Games, including the 1936 Berlin Games which were used for propaganda purposes by Nazi Germany.
The next Summer Games will be held in 2028 in Los Angeles.
