The 2026 Youth Olympic Games are the very first Olympic event to be held on the African continent. It took more than a century of the Olympic movement to get there, and through the "youth" edition. The Games of the major powers remain elsewhere. The symbolism is powerful, but it shouldn't make us forget this hierarchy.
A sovereign capability test.
Senegal is putting its credibility, and that of the continent, on the line. The events are being held in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly, with approximately 2,700 athletes expected. The message is clear: they've delivered. Two days before the opening ceremony, the Organizing Committee for the Youth Olympic Games (COJOJ) confirmed that the Olympic Village was operational and that all venues were ready. The IOC President, Kirsty Coventry, herself praised the quality of the facilities.
These are the first Youth Olympic Games held on the African continent. For any future bid to host major Games, whether by Lagos, Johannesburg, Cairo, Casablanca, or a joint bid, the Dakar experience will be considered as a key piece of evidence. The IOC will examine what happened here: transportation, security, accommodation, crowd management, and the quality of the broadcast.
And that's where the injustice lies. When a European or Asian city experiences a hiccup, we talk about the city, the committee, the management. When Africa has one, the interpretation becomes continental: "This is what happens when Africa organizes." A single failure is held against the entire continent. This asymmetry is real, it's unfair, but it's the way the game is played. Senegal knows this, and therefore exerts a pressure that Paris or Tokyo have never faced.
The uncomfortable questions.
The cost and the debt: In a country under budgetary strain, who pays and what legacy remains after November 13th? "White elephants" have already marked the history of major events in Africa.
The social impact: The Prime Minister had to order a plan to adjust the school calendar for the period of the Games. And traffic restrictions on the Autoroute de l'Avenir (Highway of the Future) were imposed by decree. Dakar, already congested, is absorbing the shock daily.
Youth as a subject: These Games are for youth. But Senegalese youth expect jobs first and foremost, not just medals.
The real pan-African issue.
Dakar could become proof of what Africa can do on its own: finance, organize, and tell the story. Or it could become the backdrop for a celebration whose benefits go elsewhere. The verdict won't be delivered on November 13th, when the flame is extinguished. It will come afterward. What will become of the Diamniadio and Saly training sites? Will the young athletes be trained and supported, or forgotten as soon as the cameras leave? Will the benefits reach the neighborhoods, or will they remain confined to the hotels? That's when we'll know if Africa truly organized the Games, or if it merely hosted them.
