Krépin Diatta : L’absence qui rappelle le douloureux précédent Saliou Ciss
Krépin Diatta's absence from Patrick Vieira's initial squad list is already generating considerable discussion in Senegalese football. The versatile Senegalese international, despite being part of the squad that competed in the 2026 World Cup, is not among the 29 players called up by the new Lions coach for upcoming international fixtures. This situation inevitably brings back memories of Saliou Ciss.
Senegal's new coach has chosen not to include Krépin Diatta in his first squad. When questioned about this decision, Patrick Vieira didn't keep anyone in suspense. For him, the reason is primarily sporting: the player is currently without a club and hasn't played in a competitive match recently.
This justification, however, does not mean that the door to the national team is definitively closed to Krépin Diatta. Quite the contrary. Patrick Vieira was keen to reiterate the high regard he has for the player, highlighting in particular his excellent performance during the last World Cup.
The new national team coach's message seems clear: Krépin Diatta must first find a club and playing time before he can aspire to a return to the Lions. A free agent since the end of his time with AS Monaco, the former Club Brugge player remains able to sign with a new team despite the closure of the summer transfer window, as he is now a free agent.
The ghost of Saliou Ciss
This situation is reminiscent of the Saliou Ciss case. A champion of Africa with Senegal in 2022, the left-back was nevertheless absent from the squad for the World Cup in Qatar a few months later. At the time, his absence raised many questions, particularly because he had been one of the key players in the Lions' first continental title.
However, the comparison ends there in several respects. In Krépin Diatta's case, Patrick Vieira has only just taken over as national team coach and is announcing his first squad as part of a new cycle. The French manager has called up 29 players, including several new faces, a sign of his desire to refresh the squad.
Most importantly, Vieira did not question Krépin Diatta's footballing abilities. His absence is directly linked to his club situation and his lack of match fitness.
A situation that raises questions.
On social media and in discussions among supporters, the question is starting to be asked: Is Krépin Diatta at risk of permanently losing his place with the Lions if he delays finding a club?
The player has significant experience with the national team and was still among the 26 players selected by Pape Thiaw for the 2026 World Cup. His versatile profile and international experience are assets, but the new coach seems to want to favour, for this first gathering, players regularly involved in competition.
The ball is now in Krépin Diatta's court. Quickly finding a club, resuming competition, and accumulating playing time will all be factors that could influence his chances of returning to the national team.
