Senegalese international Lamine Camara experienced a very turbulent end to the transfer window. Having been given permission to join Chelsea, the AS Monaco midfielder was recalled at the last minute by the club's management. Following the frustration of those close to the Senegalese footballer, including his agent Diomansy Kamara, and criticism of the Monaco management, Thiago Scuro has broken his silence.
The CEO of Monaco, accused of being the main reason for the failed transfer, explained how the deal unfolded, linking it closely to that of Folarin Balogun and taking a swipe at the Chelsea board in the process. Here is his full statement, as reported by English journalist Ben Jacobs.
“We needed to generate money, driven by regulations. We had two options in mind [selling Lamine Camara or Flo Balogun]. We made it clear that our priority was to keep Lamine at the club. We were open to the transfer of Balogun.”
“During the day, we had a clear agreement for Balogun to go to Everton. Balogun flew out yesterday morning to have his medical and sign a contract. Our plan was working very well at that point…”
"That was the situation until mid-afternoon. What happened was that Chelsea kept testing and trying things out. 'What about Lamine? What about Lamine?'"
"Around 4:00 PM yesterday, we received a call from Chelsea. Okay, we've sold a player in that position [Enzo Fernandez]. Deal done. Is there any possibility that Monaco would be open to selling Lamine? The answer was the same. No."
“Balogun was in Liverpool to undergo his medical examination. Everything was going rather well. Around 7:00 p.m., we were contacted by Everton who raised questions about Balogun’s medical examination, which, for our medical staff as well as for the player’s personal medical staff, made no sense.
“And then, of course, Chelsea saw the opportunity. ‘OK, Monaco needs money,’ they thought. ‘Balogun is struggling [to finalize]. Let’s go for it. Let’s try.’ And that’s the game. It’s fair play to play that game. There’s no problem.”
"It was almost 8:00 PM and we started negotiations with Chelsea. I informed the player [Camara] directly myself. I called him. We had discussions about the conditions for Lamine to go to Chelsea. At the same time, discussions about Balogun's medical examination were underway."
“And what happened was, around 10:00 PM, Everton realized, ‘OK, there’s no problem.’ We’re ready to do it. Let’s sign the contract. As soon as we had that information, we went back to Chelsea and thought, ‘OK, we have our agreement there [with Everton]. There’s no agreement here [with Chelsea].’ It’s also fair play to do that. It’s part of the game.”
“Because of this, we become the bad guys in the play. People say ‘Monaco is not fair play, Monaco is not right.’ It’s too much.”
“Then with Balogun, we had five minutes to finalize the agreement. I signed the contract. Everton signed the contract. At the last minute, the player decided not to sign.”
“Balogun’s allegation is: ‘I don’t feel well because of the way the club has treated me. I don’t feel well because Everton’s medical department has raised doubts about my future or my health. I have nothing [no medical problems], so I’m not comfortable signing a long-term contract here.’ And that’s how we closed our transfer window.”
