The announcement of Lionel Messi's departure from the Argentine national team sparked numerous reactions in the football world. Among the tributes paid to the 39-year-old star, José Mourinho's stood out in particular for its restraint and elegance.

After 207 appearances for Argentina and 125 goals, Lionel Messi has decided to end his international career. This decision marks the end of an exceptional chapter in the history of Argentine and world football.

The departure of "La Pulga" (Messi) obviously did not leave José Mourinho indifferent. Despite their rivalry in the Real Madrid-Barcelona clásico, the Portuguese manager made a point of praising the international career of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner in a message published in response to the player's announcement.

“Congratulations on your brilliant and unforgettable international career. The next Copa América and the next World Cup will never be quite the same,” Mourinho wrote.

With these few words, the former Chelsea manager paid tribute to Lionel Messi's immense impact on major international competitions. Winner of the Copa América in 2021 and then the World Cup in 2022, the Argentinian has left his mark on an entire generation.

His absence from the upcoming major international tournaments will therefore leave a considerable void. For Mourinho, as for many observers, the tournaments to come will inevitably have a different feel without one of the greatest players in the history of football.
