Ligue 1 sénégalaise : Seize clubs à l’assaut du trône de Teungueth FC
The 2026-2027 season of the Senegalese Ligue 1 championship resumes this weekend. Sixteen teams are vying to succeed Teungueth FC, the reigning champions. Between the established title contenders, ambitious underdogs, and newly promoted sides, the competition promises to be fierce.
Senegalese professional football returns to the pitch this weekend. The sixteen teams competing in Ligue 1 approach this new season with a common goal: to win the Senegalese championship title.
Defending champions Teungueth FC intend to defend their crown against ambitious competition.
As in previous editions, several clubs are presenting strong arguments. Jaraaf of Dakar, now managed by Souleymane Dieng "Selle," the most decorated club in the country, Génération Foot, Casa Sports, US Gorée, and AJEL of Rufisque are among the contenders to watch closely. These teams, which have seen departures during the off-season, have also strengthened their squads to remain competitive.
The battle for the title could hold some surprises, however. Several teams have ambitions to shake up the hierarchy and join the fight for the top spots.
Outsiders ready to shake up the hierarchy
Among the teams likely to cause an upset, Essamaye FC of Ziguinchor will be particularly closely watched. Promoted to the top flight this season, the club's first challenge will be to adapt to the demands of Ligue 1 and establish itself permanently among the best teams in the country.
Linguère de Saint-Louis, for its part, hopes to regain its form with the return of its iconic coach, Amara Traoré. The Saint-Louis club, the first-ever league champions in 2009, is counting on this new momentum to rekindle its ambitions and climb back up to the top of national football.
AS Pikine, Guédiawaye FC, and US Ouakam will also be contenders. These teams have the potential to play leading roles, provided they get off to a good start in the league and maintain consistency throughout the season.
Teungueth FC already looking towards Africa
Reigning champions Teungueth FC will have to wait before launching their national campaign. Currently preparing for their Champions League match, the Rufisque-based club saw their opening day fixture against US Ouakam postponed.
This setback will allow the reigning champions to focus on their continental fixture, but their league opener will be closely watched. Facing rivals determined to reclaim the top spot, Malick Daf's Teungueth FC will need to quickly find their rhythm to solidify their position.
Between the desire to retain the title, the ambition of the established contenders, and the desire of the underdogs to cause an upset, the 2026-2027 season promises to be an open competition. The first few matchdays will already provide valuable clues about the strengths of the teams involved and which ones are capable of winning the title race.
