Ligue des Champions : Michael Olise craque et pénalise le Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich let a victory slip away against Viking Stavanger (3-3). Having turned the game around after trailing by two goals, Michael Olise's sending-off completely changed the course of the match. The Frenchman will therefore miss the clash against Arsenal, scheduled for Wednesday, October 21.
Bayern Munich endured a frustrating Champions League evening. Caught off guard in the 2nd minute by Viking Stavanger, Vincent Kompany's men then collapsed, finding themselves two goals down at the start of the second half. But the Germans found the necessary resources to turn things around, scoring three goals between the 54th and 71st minutes thanks to a triple substitution by their manager.
Just when it seemed Bayern Munich had done the hard part, Michael Olise ruined everything. Already booked for pulling Askildsen's shirt, the French international lost his temper with Norwegian captain Zlatko Tripic. After an altercation between the two players, the Bayern winger kicked the ball at his opponent's face, right in front of the referee.
The punishment was swift: a second yellow card resulting in a red card. Reduced to ten men, Bayern Munich retreated and eventually conceded the equalizer. A cruel outcome for Bayern, who drop two valuable points and, more importantly, will have to do without their number 17 when they host Arsenal next Wednesday.
Kompany and Kane regret the Frenchman's gesture
After the match, Vincent Kompany did not try to downplay his player's mistake, while expressing his desire to move on. "Yes, but he knows it (that it was a stupid reaction)," explained the Bavarian coach, emphasizing that his player was aware of his error and regretted his behavior.
The Belgian coach believes, however, that this sending-off should serve as a lesson for Olise. According to him, the Frenchman should have avoided getting drawn into an unnecessary situation, especially since his team had taken the lead. "Number 10 was smarter than you," he reportedly reminded him, referring to Zlatko Tripic.
Harry Kane also expressed his regret over the reaction, which he felt penalized the entire team. "It was a big mistake," the English striker told Canal+, believing the second yellow card was justified after the ball struck an opponent in the face.
For the Bayern Munich striker, this sending-off is a blow for both Olise and the team. However, he urges his teammates to look ahead and prepare for their next European match.
Bayern Munich will therefore have to face Arsenal without one of their most influential attacking players. For Michael Olise, this European evening leaves a bitter taste: in a matter of seconds, his over-enthusiasm transformed a spectacular comeback into a frustrating draw.
