« Ma réflexion a commencé dès la dernière CAN » : Édouard Mendy retrace le cheminement de sa décision
It's now an open secret. Édouard Mendy, goalkeeper for the Senegalese national team—one of the best in his position in Africa and the world—has officially ended his international career. In an interview with RFI, the Senegalese goalkeeper—nominated among the ten finalists for the 2026 Yashin Trophy—revealed the long process of reflection that led to his decision.
“I think there are many factors to consider, and in the end, the balance tips one way or the other,” he confided. Before revealing: “To be honest, my thinking began during the last Africa Cup of Nations, the one held in Morocco. From that moment on, I followed a logical and clear-headed path that led me to the conclusion that it was the right time to end my international career.”
"I had the privilege of playing in two World Cups, participating in three and a half AFCON tournaments - the first one (2019), unfortunately, I broke my finger - winning two of them, embodying this role of big brother, being involved in passing on knowledge to prepare the present generation but also the future one," he rejoices.
In addition to this, there were "more family-related factors" which, according to him, tipped the scales. Taking all these factors into account, "We tell ourselves that it's time to say stop, to look in the mirror, to tell ourselves that we gave it our all and that the mission has been accomplished," concludes Édouard Mendy without regret.
