Mondial-2026: la justice canadienne confirme le refus d'entrée du Ghanéen Partey, accusé de viols
Canadian justice rejected on Tuesday a request from Ghana to allow footballer Thomas Partey, who will be tried for rape in the United Kingdom in 2027, to enter Canada for his national team's first match at the World Cup, CBC reported.
Ghana was contesting the decision by Canadian authorities to ban the Ghanaian midfielder from entering its territory due to the legal proceedings against him.
But a judge of the Federal Court of Canada rejected this appeal on Tuesday, according to the Canadian public broadcaster CBC.
Former Arsenal player, currently at Villarreal in Spain, Thomas Partey, 32, is unable to travel to Toronto, where Ghana will kick off their World Cup campaign on Wednesday against Panama.
Thomas Partey has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, in connection with allegations made by four women between 2020 and 2022, when he was playing for Arsenal (2020-2025).
Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz told reporters in Toronto on Tuesday that his team would be ready regardless of the Canadian court's decision.
"There is no need to comment," he said, before adding: "My job is to play with the cards I've been dealt."
The Portuguese coach did not comment on the consequences that the possible absence of Thomas Partey would entail.
On Friday, FIFA announced that Canada had refused to grant a visa to the Ghanaian footballer. When contacted by AFP, Canadian authorities declined to confirm the visa refusal, explaining that they could not provide details "on individual cases."
