Mondial-2026: le défenseur néerlandais Jurrien Timber forfait
Dutch defender Jurriën Timber, hampered by a groin injury, is forced to withdraw from the 2026 World Cup and will be replaced by Lutsharel Geertruida, the Netherlands national team announced on its X account on Monday.
The 24-year-old defender, who reached the Champions League final with Arsenal on May 30, "has not recovered sufficiently from his groin injury to participate in the World Cup in a responsible, medically speaking" the team managed by Ronald Koeman stated.
"In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that (Jurriën) Timber will leave the national team's preparation camp in New York after the match against Uzbekistan," which takes place on Monday evening at the Icahn Stadium.
Aged 25, right-back Lutsharel Geertruida, on loan to Sunderland from Leipzig this season, has been called up to replace this absentee and will join his teammates in Kansas City, among whom is Jurriën Timber's brother, midfielder Quinten Timber.
The Netherlands, who were already missing Xavi Simons, Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij, will kick off their World Cup campaign on Sunday, June 14 against Japan in the clash of Group F, which also includes Sweden and Tunisia.
