A major blow for the Moroccan national team on the eve of the World Cup. Central defender Nayef Aguerd (30 years old, 60 caps, 2 goals) has announced that he will ultimately not participate in the global tournament, as he is unable to return to his best physical condition after an injury that has hampered him in recent months.

In an Instagram post, the former Stade Rennais FC player clarified that this decision was not related to a relapse. "Unfortunately, I will not be taking part in this World Cup. This is not a relapse. On the contrary, I am feeling better and better every day and my injury is now behind me," he explained.

Despite encouraging progress in his recovery, Aguerd acknowledged that his performance level was not yet sufficient to help the Atlas Lions as he had hoped from the start of the competition. "The staff and I have determined that my current performance level is not yet sufficient to help the team during the group stage," he added.

The Moroccan defender also emphasized that this decision had been made in consultation with the coaching staff, in the best interest of the team. He further thanked the Federation president for the resources deployed to facilitate his recovery.

After a particularly grueling season, both physically and mentally, Aguerd hoped to return in time to represent his country on the world stage. "I tried, as best I could, to give everything to come back in time and regain my best form. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible within the necessary timeframe. It's a disappointment, of course, but I accept it with clarity and responsibility," concluded the Moroccan international.

Aguerd's absence represents a real challenge for the Moroccan defense, as his experience and leadership are major assets for the team.
