Mondial 2026 : une enquête soulève des interrogations sur la qualification de la RDC
The Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) path to the 2026 World Cup is the subject of controversy following an investigation by "Le Monde" and the "New York Times".
According to these revelations, goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, a former French youth international, participated in the qualifiers even though his change of sporting nationality to represent the DRC had not been fully regularized.
FIFA lawyers have reportedly identified this irregularity. A strict application of the regulations could potentially have allowed Burkina Faso to participate in the African playoffs instead of the DRC.
Nigeria, eliminated by the DRC in the playoffs, also reportedly appealed to FIFA, but its appeals were deemed to be too late.
These revelations could reignite the debates on the conditions for the DRC to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
