N'Golo Kanté: "On a vu ce qui s'est passé 2002"
France midfielder N'Golo Kanté said at a press conference on Monday that Les Bleus wanted to win against Senegal, "not for revenge" of 2002, but "to get off to a good start" at the 2026 World Cup where they enter the competition on Tuesday in East Rutherford, a suburb of New York.
"We saw what happened in 2002. We want a victory today, not for revenge, but to start the competition well and go as far as possible," said the 2018 world champion, who is expected to be a substitute on Tuesday for the first match at the American World Cup.
The Fenerbahçe midfielder replaced his captain Kylian Mbappé, who was excused from the pre-match press conference and "protected" by his coach Didier Deschamps due to the excessively long journeys between the Blues' hotel in New Jersey, the Metlife stadium where the press conference was held and the training ground of the New York Red Bulls where they will hold their last session in the afternoon.
"This morning, I saw three players," Didier Deschamps explained. "We will have two one-hour journeys. I want to protect N'Golo (Kanté), but I know he gets up very early. With the intense heat, I am doing my best to protect my players. That is my primary objective."
The intense heat was, in fact, "a factor in our preparation," Kanté said. "We saw how we were affected after training in the heat and sun. We need to make the most of the cooling breaks. Everyone is involved. The players on the bench will be important. We are ready to start."
"This is my second World Cup. In 2018, it was new, it was beautiful to win it. This one is different, with new players, but it's still just as beautiful. And I want to enjoy it and win again," concluded Kanté, 35 years old and the oldest member of the French squad.
