Patrick Vieira sur le banc des Lions : « Il va pouvoir se régaler »
The arrival of Patrick Vieira as head coach of the Senegalese national team has generated great enthusiasm among his former close associates and mentors. Testimonials gathered by L'Observateur from Olivier Dacourt, René Girard, and Luis Fernandez paint a very favorable portrait of Pape Thiaw's successor.
For Olivier Dacourt, his former teammate on the French national team and at Inter Milan, Vieira's attachment to Senegal is undeniable. "Even though he played for France, he was proud of his roots. Senegal held a special place in his heart," he told L'Observateur. According to Dacourt, the new coach arrives with "broad shoulders" despite a difficult situation and has four years to "rebuild something great." Dacourt emphasizes, however, the need to reorganize the Lions' environment, believing that the talent is already there and that Vieira will primarily have to lay "lasting foundations."
René Girard, who worked with him on the French national team, emphasizes the coach's human and managerial qualities. "Patrick isn't a loudmouth, much less a disciplinarian," he asserts in the pages of the Groupe Futurs Médias newspaper. For the former assistant coach of the French national team, Vieira is a "simple," humble, and respected man, capable of asserting himself without raising his voice. With the Senegalese national team, he believes he "will be able to enjoy himself," given the pool of talent at his disposal. Girard stresses, however, that the main challenge now will be to pass on his knowledge and convince the players of the soundness of his choices.
Luis Fernandez, who gave Vieira his start at AS Cannes, is also optimistic about his chances of success. "If he's allowed to work, he'll succeed in putting in place a good structure, a good system, and a good style of play so that Senegal can shine again," he says. The former French international believes that Vieira possesses the necessary qualities to unite a group and that he will be able to rely on young Senegalese talents as well as players playing for big clubs.
Beyond the praise, L'Observateur's interviewees therefore identify the same issue: to give Vieira the necessary working conditions to exploit the potential of the Lions.
