Polémique au Mexique : Me Babacar Ndiaye annonce des sanctions, Yacine Diop visée
The crisis within the Senegalese women's national basketball team is worsening. In an interview with L'Observateur, the president of the Senegalese Basketball Federation (FSBB), Babacar Ndiaye, rejects accusations of mismanagement and announces disciplinary sanctions after hearings with the players involved: Yacine Diop, Ndioma Kane, Madjiguène Sène, and Sabou Guèye.
Stranded in Mexico after Senegal's elimination from the Olympic pre-qualifying tournament, the Lionesses denounced several difficulties, particularly regarding food, luggage, and logistical support. In a live broadcast on social media, center Madjiguène Sène stated, "I had to pay out of my own pocket to buy food for the girls." She then clarified, "Afterwards, we received 200,000 FCFA via Wave, which is 50,000 FCFA per person."
Faced with these accusations, lawyer Babacar Ndiaye slammed his fist on the table and denounced an "attempt to sabotage and denigrate the federation." He specifically rejected the testimonies alleging that players were forced to sleep on the floor in an airport: "It's premeditated, because it's easy to be in an airport, lie down on the floor, have your picture taken, get up, and then go to your hotel room." He added: "We have hotel bills that prove we made arrangements whenever necessary."
The president of the FSBB also disputes the idea of a lack of financial support. He claims to have personally sent 600,000 FCFA, or 150,000 FCFA per player, to allow them to buy clothing and sports equipment after the baggage problems. He asserts: "We gave enough money for food."
Yacine Diop in the crosshairs
The spokesperson for the Groupe Futurs Médias newspaper criticized the players for airing their grievances on social media rather than addressing them within the team. He announced sanctions, but only after hearing from the various parties involved: "Such things cannot be left unaddressed. There is discipline within a team. [...] There will be sanctions, but we must get to the bottom of what really happened."
Among the players mentioned is captain Yacine Diop, whose involvement in the controversy has particularly puzzled the president of the FSBB (Senegalese Basketball Federation). The player had declined the national team call-up to remain with her club. Lawyer Babacar Ndiaye is therefore surprised by her involvement in this affair: "From that point on, I can't understand how she could get involved in this. As captain, she didn't want to respond [...]. I wonder why she intervened in this matter when she hasn't responded."
The players in question will have to be heard by the federal authorities before any decision is made.
