Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo under threat of a heavy sanction

Cristiano Ronaldo's abrupt departure from the Portugal squad could have disciplinary consequences. While the 41-year-old striker is reportedly close to ending his international career, his behavior during the last international break could also lead to a sanction from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

According to A Bola, Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Seleção training camp following a disagreement with new coach Jorge Jesus. Despite attempts by Jesus and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to convince him to stay, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner reportedly returned to Madrid aboard his private jet.

This decision comes as several Portuguese media outlets are now suggesting a possible international retirement for the former Real Madrid player. But even if he were to stop wearing the Portuguese jersey, Ronaldo could still face disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

Up to six months suspension

Article 160 of the Portuguese Federation's regulations provides for sanctions against a player called up who leaves the gathering or does not show up for a national team activity without valid justification.

"A player who, having been duly summoned, abandons or fails to appear without justification for a training session, a match or an activity of the national teams or related to the sporting representation of the FPF or of Portugal, is sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months," states the regulation cited by A Bola.

For a professional player, this suspension may also be accompanied by a fine of between 500 and 1,000 euros, according to the terms laid down in the text.

The same article also provides for an "automatic preventive suspension" in the event of absence or abandonment of the gathering.

Cristiano Ronaldo could therefore face disciplinary proceedings from the Portuguese Football Federation. It remains to be seen whether his departure will be considered an offense and what decision the FPF will take against him.
