Portugal : L’affaire Ronaldo prend une tournure politique
The situation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo now extends beyond the purely sporting realm. While the Portuguese captain left the national team camp on Wednesday amid tensions with new coach Jorge Jesus, the Portuguese government has also taken an interest in the matter.
According to information from "SCI Noticias", Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has contacted Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), to discuss the situation and obtain a meeting with Jorge Jesus.
The Prime Minister also reportedly had a direct conversation with Ronaldo. The aim was to understand the reasons that led the 41-year-old striker to leave the training camp and to hear his side of the story.
The content of these conversations has not yet been made public. This intervention comes at a time when Ronaldo's future with the Portuguese national team is the subject of much speculation.
With 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner holds a major place in the history of the Seleção. His departure from the squad could therefore have significant consequences, especially as the question of a possible end to his international career is at the heart of the debate.
