Portugal: The success in Norway overshadowed by the Ronaldo saga

Portugal secured a valuable victory with a 2-1 win in Norway in the Nations League. However, three days after this win, the Seleção's news remains largely dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was absent from the match but is embroiled in a controversy with his coach, Jorge Jesus.

In Oslo, Portugal had plenty to celebrate. Facing a confident Norway, the Portuguese team secured an important victory thanks in large part to Gonçalo Ramos, who started in Cristiano Ronaldo's absence. The striker seized the opportunity to score the decisive goal and solidify his position in the attacking hierarchy.

With two wins in two matches, Portugal took the lead in their group before their next game against Denmark. But this sporting achievement was quickly overshadowed by the Ronaldo situation.

A frustration that is generating a lot of discussion

Cristiano Ronaldo did not participate in the match against Norway. However, his behavior after the final whistle immediately raised questions. The Portuguese captain quickly returned to the locker room, without taking part in the traditional thank-you speeches to the fans.

The situation then became tense regarding his playing time. According to the Portuguese press, Jorge Jesus had initially planned to bring Ronaldo on for around thirty minutes. The way the match unfolded ultimately led the manager to revise his plans.

On Tuesday, Ronaldo participated in the beginning of training before continuing his preparation individually at the hotel. This has fueled speculation about a possible disagreement between the player and his national team coach.

Given the scale of the affair, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, decided to bring forward his visit to the national team. He was initially scheduled to travel to the Azores to observe the U23 team, but ultimately joined the squad in Copenhagen to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus spoke on Tuesday evening. According to reports in the Portuguese media, this discussion helped to ease tensions. No sanctions are being considered, and the incident is now considered closed.

Ronaldo's still immense weight

Beyond this particular incident, this affair primarily illustrates the special place Cristiano Ronaldo holds within the Portuguese national team. At 41, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner remains a central figure for the team, even when he's not on the pitch. A simple decision regarding his playing time is enough to provoke numerous reactions and dominate the news surrounding the Seleção.

Jorge Jesus, however, did not publicly question his captain's status. He simply made a sporting decision during a match that Portugal ultimately won.

The real question now is whether this situation can be definitively overcome and allow the Portuguese national team to focus on its sporting objectives. Because, despite being 41 years old, Ronaldo maintains he is ready to accept any role within the team.

It remains to be seen whether his environment will allow him to occupy this role without every decision concerning him becoming a new media episode.
