Pourquoi l’Argentine ne pourra pas retirer le n°10 de Lionel Messi en sélection
The Argentine Football Federation's desire to retire the famous number 10 jersey of Lionel Messi after his international retirement is running up against a FIFA regulation.
A page is about to turn in Argentina. Next Tuesday at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, Lionel Messi will play his last match for the Argentine national team against Benin.
At 39, in his 208th and final appearance, the legend will bring to a close a monumental international career marked by a World Cup victory and two Copa America titles. At the end of the match, as the Argentinian people mourn their idol, the question of the future of the number 10 jersey will arise...
Argentina will have a number 10 at the 2030 World Cup
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has already considered this. Claudio Tapia, the president, has expressed a desire to retire the jersey that Messi has worn since 2009, after the retirement of Juan Roman Riquelme (he had previously worn numbers 18 and 19).
But the AFA won't be able to retire Messi's jersey, except during friendly matches if the Argentine Football Association so desires. According to FIFA, each team must assign numbers from 1 to 26. The number 10 will therefore have to be given to a player during a World Cup or Copa America. Quite a lot of pressure.
