FIFA Presidency: Kozo Tashima enters the race against Gianni Infantino

Gianni Infantino could have a new competitor in the race for the FIFA presidency. Kozo Tashima, former president of the Japan Football Association (JFA), has officially announced his intention to run for the position in the election scheduled for March 18, 2027 in Rabat, Morocco.

At 68, the Japanese leader intends to promote a vision of football based on integrity, transparency, and sporting values. His candidacy has the support of the Japanese Football Association, an endorsement he welcomed in the pages of the daily newspaper "Sports Nippon".

“It’s not about winning or losing, but about conveying to the world the honest, healthy, and ethical attitude that Japanese football has instilled,” he explained. He added that FIFA now needs to rediscover these principles, which he believes form an essential foundation for the future of world football.

At the helm of the JFA between 2016 and 2024, Kozo Tashima thus wishes to make another voice heard within the governing body of international football.

This announcement comes as Gianni Infantino, running for re-election, appeared weakened in recent months by revelations concerning a private investment project in a company linked to the World Cup. However, the incumbent president has consolidated his position and now appears to be the frontrunner to secure a fourth term.

Its position has been strengthened in particular by the support of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which renewed its backing two weeks ago. This decision has caused a stir within Japanese football, prompting Takeshi Okada, vice-president of the AFC, to resign.

The battle to succeed Gianni Infantino could also include another contender. Ramon Vega, a former Swiss international defender who notably played for Tottenham, has also announced his intention to enter the race.

Candidates have until November 18th to officially submit their applications. The election will be held on March 18th, 2027, during the FIFA Congress in Rabat.
