Refoulé des États-Unis après un interrogatoire de 11 h : l’arbitre somalien exprime sa « déception »
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was turned away upon arrival in the United States last weekend, will ultimately not participate in the World Cup, despite being selected among the 52 central referees chosen by FIFA for the tournament which begins on June 11.
In an interview with the New York Times, the African referee of the year for 2025 confessed to being "really, really disappointed." "I'm just a referee trying to live my biggest dream, to go to the World Cup," he said, asserting that he had presented "the correct paperwork and the correct visa" to enter the United States.
The 34-year-old official recounted undergoing an 11-hour interrogation focusing on Somalia and the jihadist group Al-Shabaab. Following this procedure, he was sent back to Turkey, his country of origin. "I think they have a problem with my country," he remarked.
When contacted by AFP, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) indicated that a Somali national who arrived at Miami airport on June 6 underwent "additional inspection" before being deemed "inadmissible due to issues related to his background check."
The Somali Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed its support for the referee, praising Omar Artan's "integrity, professionalism, and ongoing contribution to the development of football." In a statement relayed by the BBC, the ministry said it "deeply regrets the circumstances that prevented Omar Artan from participating in the tournament," despite diplomatic efforts undertaken with US authorities and FIFA.
