Romario dézingue le sélectionneur du Portugal : «C’est un sale type. Je l’aurais envoyé se faire f...»
Romario didn't mince words in defending Cristiano Ronaldo in his conflict with Jorge Jesus. The former Brazilian striker believes that the Portuguese star was justified in leaving the national team camp after feeling, according to him, publicly disavowed and, above all, deprived of a commitment he had been promised.
“Cristiano Ronaldo seems to me to be a very direct person, a real man. And from what he said, Jorge Jesus – whom I appreciate, by the way, I had contact with him when he was coaching Flamengo here – did not keep his word to him,” said Romario.
"Frankly, when someone doesn't respect an agreement... A handshake is worth more than a contract or anything else. If the guy doesn't keep his word, he's a bad guy," he said.
For the former FC Barcelona player, if events unfolded as the five-time Ballon d'Or winner describes, his decision is understandable. "If it happened as Ronaldo said, then he's right to leave. 'Oh, but he abandoned the national team'... OK, but he'd already been humiliated once. We didn't keep our word to him. Why go through that a second time? Just leave," Romario continued.
According to Ronaldo's account, Jorge Jesus promised him playing time before leaving him on the bench after his warm-up. This situation reportedly deeply angered the Portuguese striker.
Romario also defended Ronaldo regarding the press conference that reportedly preceded his departure. "There were things agreed upon for the press conference, but he didn't say anything at all. According to Ronaldo, he was arrogant and insolent. He publicly exposed Ronaldo. Ronaldo felt disrespected and belittled, as if he no longer mattered. So he left," explained the former Brazilian international.
Romario acknowledges, however, that his analysis is based on Cristiano Ronaldo's version of events. This does not prevent him from expressing particularly strong support for the Portuguese player.
"In that case, I would have done the same thing, except that before leaving, I would have told him to f*** off. But I would have left too. I think Ronaldo's mistake, in fact, was not telling him to f*** off immediately," Romario concluded.
