Sénégal - Comores (1-0) : Les tops et les flops
In a friendly match in Marseille, the Lions of Teranga defeated Comoros 1-0. Patrick Vieira's men could have scored even more goals with greater efficiency, but they displayed an interesting possession-based style of play. Here are the highs and lows of the match.
The tops
Bara Sapoko Ndiaye
Always looking to attack, the player elevated Senegal's game with his technical finesse and ability to play in tight spaces. He was a key player both in ball retention and counter-pressing. Deployed at right-back in the 63rd minute following Lamine Sy's injury, the Bayern Munich player didn't let his level drop; quite the opposite. He continued to create opportunities. With a perfect cross, he found Iliman Ndiaye unmarked in front of goal in the 66th minute, but the winger miscontrolled the ball. A great match for the 18-year-old, who continues to impress for the Lions.
Idrissa Gana Guèye
The art of performing with simplicity. Without flashy displays, "Gana" was the driving force of Senegal's midfield and attack. With simple yet effective passes, he orchestrated the Lions' play. In defense, he pressed, won back possession, and covered for the opposition to prevent the Comoros from advancing. With or without the ball, this afternoon, Gana Gueye showcased his game intelligence. At 37, he demonstrates that he still has what it takes to be the leader of the Lions.
Kalidou Koulibaly
After a solid first half, including two excellent interventions, the 35-year-old player grew into the game in the second half. During Comoros' strongest period in the second half, the captain raised his game to protect his goal. Koulibaly was also crucial on the ball, delivering several well-timed passes. This quality in build-up play allowed the Lions to break through Comoros' first line of defense and launch their attacking transitions.
Pape Matar Sarr
Finally, the image we've come to expect from him: less wastefulness and more initiative. Complementary to Gana Gueye and Bara Ndiaye, he linked up well with the rest of his teammates. Dangerous in the final third, he repeatedly launched his forwards with through balls. He did slow down in the second half, admittedly, but overall, he delivered a convincing performance.
The flops
Lamine Sy
Solid and disciplined defensively, the Auxerre full-back nevertheless showed limitations offensively. In an hour of play, he ventured forward several times but failed to make a difference and provide service to his teammates. He didn't complete a single cross and struggled to link up with Iliman Ndiaye, who was often positioned on the same flank. To establish himself with Senegal, he will need to be effective in both areas of the pitch.
Rassoul Ndiaye
The Le Havre captain, in his first appearance under Patrick Vieira, failed to impress. Brought on in the 63rd minute, he missed three clear-cut chances, including two one-on-ones (70th and 81st minutes), completely misjudging one of his shots. In open play, he was unable to match the level of his teammates.
