Sénégal - France (1-3) : Les tops et les flops
The Lions of 2026 will not repeat their 2002 performance. Facing France on Tuesday, Senegal lost 3-1. Yet, Pape Thiaw's players dominated the first half, coming close to opening the scoring twice. In the second half, the African champions made numerous technical errors before succumbing to the French attack. Here are the highs and lows.
The best
Krépin Diatta
The Lions' right-back was excellent against France. He frequently outpaced Désiré Doué to contribute offensively, particularly in the first half. Defensively, he was impenetrable. Diatta made five tackles during the match, all of which were successful. He won all eight duels against the French attackers. A commanding performance.
Nicolas Jackson
He caused Upamecano and Saliba a lot of problems. The French striker made several runs behind the French defense, hitting the post in the first half before being flagged offside on a goal that could have given Senegal a lifeline in the second. With his back to goal, he relieved pressure on Senegal with his lay-offs.
The flops
Lamine Camara
AS Monaco's midfield maestro has once again failed to impact Senegal's game. He makes several passes and layoffs, but he rarely illuminates the Lions' play with progressive passes or openings.
Sadio Mané
The technical leader put in a lot of effort, especially defensively, but made very little difference in attack. He rarely troubled Koundé. He did create Senegal's best chance at the end of the first half, but it wasn't enough for a player of his caliber.
Kalidou Koulibaly
It seems as though the captain's return to competition was rushed. He lacked pace, being outpaced by Olise on a play saved by Mendy, then twice by Barcola on the left flank. On the opening goal, he failed to anticipate Mbappé's run to compensate for his lack of speed.
