Once the lush home ground of the Lions of Senegal, the Me Abdoulaye Wade stadium has lost its luster. During the WAFU tournament matches, particularly those of the under-17 Lions, the pitch was in a deplorable state, appearing dehydrated and neglected.
Praised at its inauguration four years ago for its modernity and European-standard pitch, the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium is now facing the harsh reality of pitch maintenance in Africa. Six months after the Senegalese national team's last match, the Diamniadio pitch has been transformed and has lost all its greenness. During Senegal's match in the WAFU tournament, the pitch appeared dehydrated, worn, and a far cry from its condition during the Lions' last match against Gambia last March (3-1).
It's true that in Africa, lawns often suffer during periods of intense heat. High temperatures quickly dry out the soil, and the grass needs a significant amount of water and an often expensive irrigation system to survive normally. But for the Abdoulaye Wade stadium, it's not just a water problem.
The management of SOGIP (the public infrastructure management company for the urban centers of Diamniadio) and its main partner, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), is also under scrutiny. Two months ago, Seneweb confirmed the FSF's debt of 100 million CFA francs to the company headed by Dame Mbodj, which caused friction between the two entities. It is also worth recalling that last year, Dame Mbodj initially refused to host the match between Senegal and Mauritania at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium due to unpaid bills from the Federation, before reaching an agreement.
We tried to contact Dame Mbodj to determine responsibility for the state of the pitch at the Diamniadio stadium, without success.

Is it the image quality or is the pitch at Abdoulaye Wade Stadium like that? pic.twitter.com/5lNQUmQTph

@Fsfofficielle@afallofficiel when are you going to pay what you owe to SOGIP so that they can continue to maintain the Abdoulaye Wade stadium?

Dommage
