WAFU-A U17 Tournament: The Young Lions begin their quest for another title against Mauritania

Senegal makes its debut this Monday, September 7th, in the WAFU-A U17 tournament. At home, the Young Lions face Mauritania at the Abdoulaye Wade stadium with a clear ambition: to make a successful start and quickly set their sights on another qualification for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Organized in Senegal from September 7 to 20, 2026, this regional competition holds particular importance for the Senegalese national team. Two-time champions of the WAFU-A zone and holders of the continental title, the team led by Lamine Sané aims to once again dominate the region and secure one of the two qualifying spots for the next U17 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco.

Against Mauritania, Souleymane Commissaire Faye's teammates will have the opportunity to set the tone right from their first match. A victory would allow them to get off to an ideal start in the competition and position themselves favorably in the race for qualification.

Experience as a key asset

To meet this challenge, Lamine Sané has selected a squad of 25 players. The coach notably includes several players already experienced in international competition. Seven players from the current squad were part of the team that secured Senegal's second U17 African Championship title.

This experience at the highest level could prove invaluable during crucial moments of the tournament. It should also provide younger players with the necessary guidance to manage the pressure of a competition where every match can be decisive.

But Senegal's status also demands a certain level of expectation. The Young Lions will be under intense scrutiny from their opponents, who also dream of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations. Mauritania, therefore, represents a crucial first test that should not be underestimated.

Playing at home, with the support of their fans and the title of two-time regional champions, Senegal will have to live up to their status. Their first mission is therefore simple: beat Mauritania and get their campaign off to a great start before the next round of the tournament. In Group A, Senegal will also face Sierra Leone and The Gambia.
