UFC: 57 seconds of fight, the police officer Luis Hernandez dominated the former boxer Sedriques Dumas

A last-minute replacement for Mickey Gall, American Luis Hernandez defeated his compatriot Sedriques Dumas in the first round on Saturday night at UFC Vegas in his debut bout. This unexpected fight generated considerable buzz as it pitted... a police officer (Hernandez) against a former inmate (Dumas).

It was a fight everyone was waiting for, but not for just any reason. A police officer versus an ex-convict on the UFC card—that doesn't happen every day. Yet, the scene unfolded in Las Vegas on Saturday night. And it was the former, Luis Hernandez, who had the last word against the latter, Sedriques Dumas, to secure his very first UFC victory.

To spice things up before the match, the police officer entered the arena to the music of KRS-One's "Sound of da Police," while the former inmate chose Akon's "Locked Up." On social media, users didn't hold back from making puns on the lyrics after Dumas's swift defeat by submission.

"I don't want to judge someone based on their past."

In the cage, it took no more than a minute (57 seconds) for Hernandez, deputy sheriff of Miami-Dade County, to defeat his compatriot, who has no fewer than fourteen arrests since 2014, including four since he joined the UFC in 2023, using a guillotine choke.

"I think it's funny for the media, but there have been some things I've seen online... I'm Latino, I don't like any discrimination. This guy is a family man, he's trying to earn a living like me. I don't want to judge someone based on their past," Luis Hernandez emphasized to the press regarding the police/criminal narrative.

In the lead-up to the fight, his opponent, Sedriques Dumas, amused himself by reposting an AI-generated video of the two men singing, one in his police uniform, the other in an orange prison jumpsuit. The American was notably incarcerated in Florida in April 2025 for burglary and weapons possession. The previous year, he had been arrested for an altercation with... police officers.

Nicknamed "The Stache" because of his imposing mustache, Hernandez benefited from Mickey Gall's withdrawal due to an injury during fight week, allowing him to participate in the main card of UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas. He became the first active-duty police officer to fight in the UFC after securing a contract at Dana White's Contender Series just two weeks prior.
