Victoire des Knicks en NBA: débordements et arrestations à New York
New York police announced Sunday morning that they made 63 arrests overnight for violence or damage committed during celebrations of the Knicks' victory in the NBA finals.
The reasons for the arrest are multiple, "assault on a police officer, illegal possession of a firearm, willful damage to property, disturbance of the peace, rebellion and obstruction of the action of the authorities", the police (NYPD) detailed in a message to AFP.
Thousands of people were in the streets to celebrate the home team's victory over Victor Wembanyama's Spurs, the Knicks' first NBA title in 53 years.
A 17-year-old was injured in a shooting in Manhattan and four knife attacks were reported.
Five school buses were set on fire or destroyed, five police vehicles were severely damaged, as well as private cars.
"People climbed onto lampposts, traffic lights, structures and scaffolding. Several fights broke out. Streets and avenues were invaded by crowds refusing to disperse, blocking traffic for several hours," the police continued.
Ten law enforcement officers were injured, including "one police officer who was punched in the face and another who was hit with a glass bottle," the NYPD added.
The celebrations coincided with the first match of the FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium in neighboring New Jersey, with thousands of supporters of the two competing teams, Morocco and Brazil, lining the streets.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that a grand parade would be held Thursday to celebrate the Knicks team, who will be symbolically presented with the keys to the city.
