Assassinat de Modou Khabane Guéye à la Zac Mbao : les bijoutiers de Touba réclament justice et interpellent le président Diomaye
Modou Khabane Guéye was killed in his jewelry store, located in the Mbao business park, on Saturday, October 17, 2026. A week later, jewelers from Touba and Mbacké, wearing red armbands and scarves, held a press conference to demand justice. According to them, the perpetrator of the crime has still not been arrested. They directly appealed to the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice, and the Minister of the Interior and Public Security.
Spokespeople Sam Thiam and Ablaye Thiam, members of the Touba branch of the jewelers' association, opened their statement with: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" ("To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return"). They prayed for the jeweler, murdered in Dakar at his workplace, asking Allah to welcome him into His paradise.
Addressing President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye and the Prime Minister, the jewelers stated that they are facing very serious security problems. They recalled that they have been victims of armed robberies at their workplaces, with loot amounting to 100, 200, 300, or even 400 million CFA francs. In Touba, more than a dozen jewelry stores have been robbed without any real solution being found. "Today, the criminals are even resorting to killing," they lamented, reminding everyone that it is the State's responsibility to ensure the safety of its citizens.
They expressed outrage that someone who worked hard to feed their family could be killed, their money taken, and the person could calmly go on their way. They added that they had received no concrete information about the investigation to date.
Jewelers are demanding that the investigation be expedited so that the perpetrators can be arrested and the perpetrators of the robberies targeting their shops identified. They consider the jewelers, as well as everyone else present at the press conference, to be victims. They emphasized that a country must operate according to the rule of law and cannot descend into anarchy. Finally, they called on the authorities to take responsibility and resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
Expressing their concern and exhaustion, the jewelers stated they did not want to demonstrate or cause unrest, as no one had taught them to do so. They reminded everyone that they are employers, each providing work for five or six people who support their families. They warned that if the situation persists and escalates, Senegal could suffer the consequences.
They stated their determination to continue the mobilization until the problem is resolved. "If no solution is found, we will take matters into our own hands to make our demands heard," declared Sam Thiam and Ablaye Thiam.
