Capital of Rail or of motorcycle taxis? The heartfelt cry of young people from Thiès before the April 4th parade

Capitale du Rail ou des motos-taxis ? Le cri de cœur des jeunes Thiessois avant le défilé du 4 avril

As the 66th anniversary of Senegal's independence approaches, the city of Thiès is already buzzing with preparations. This year, the railway capital is hosting the official festivities, prompting an exceptional mobilization of local authorities and residents.

In several neighborhoods, city halls are working to finalize development and renovation projects. Streets are being decorated in the national colors, while public spaces are being paved and beautified. At Place Mamadou Dia and on Avenue Caen, the sites chosen for the military and civilian parade, the installations are already nearly 80% complete.

The people of Thiès are also preparing to welcome the Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and his government. While the enthusiasm is genuine, the expectations are equally high.

Papa Yoro Ndiaye, a resident of the city, expresses this state of mind: "A warm welcome will be given to the president, but the people hope for concrete actions in return. Among the priorities are the rehabilitation of roads, hospitals and schools, as well as the revival of the railway, a historical symbol of Thiès," he explains.

Among young people, expectations are even more pressing. Assane Ndour points out that, despite the presence of several industries, unemployment remains a worrying reality. "Many young graduates turn to motorcycle taxis due to a lack of professional opportunities," laments Assane. He therefore calls for sustainable solutions, including revitalizing the railway sector and strengthening companies like NSTS, in order to create jobs and curb crime.

Some residents, however, welcome the efforts already made. This is the case for Mamadou Ndiaye, who notes visible changes in the city and congratulates Mayor Babacar Diop for his work in beautification and modernization. According to him, Thiès is undergoing a significant transformation compared to previous years.

But for him, as for many others, one point remains central: the revival of the railway. "Thiès is the capital of the railway. If President Diomaye comes without addressing this issue, his visit will lose all meaning," he asserts.

Beyond the festivities, the population also expects increased security and investments commensurate with the city's strategic status. Between national celebrations and local demands, Thiès is thus preparing for an April 4th that will be both festive and hopeful.

le mal du Sénégal : l'indiscipline. Il ne faut pas chercher loin. Chacun fait ce qu'il veut et comme il veut car il n'y a pas d'impunité
