"C’est de la lâcheté" : Le Directeur général de Dakar Dem Dik assène ses vérités sur l’agitation autour de son départ
Since the falling out between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko, speculation has been rife within Dakar Dem Dikk. Among the rumors circulating is the possible departure of the Director General, Assane Mbengue. When questioned about this, the head of the national transport company preferred to downplay the matter and asserted that he remains focused on his mission. "I pay no attention to allegations that have no impact on my work. I continue to do my job according to my job description to earn my salary at the end of each month," he stated.
The CEO also questioned the attitude of certain employees who, according to him, benefit from the company's support while criticizing it externally. "There are people who work here, earn their living, and then insult the company when they leave. I wonder if these people deserve their salaries," he said.
Assane Mbengue recalls that his priority upon arriving at Dakar Dem Dikk was to protect the company from political disputes. "When I came to Dakar Dem Dikk, it was one of the most iconic companies. We left a much more liberal job to come and answer the call of our country. Our first concern was to eradicate politics within the company," he explains.
He insists he never asked workers to become politically involved with him. "It's the national company, and within it, I always wear an administrative hat. No worker can say that we asked them to support us politically. The political arena is not the company, and we know how to differentiate it from my political party," the managing director emphasizes.
Assane Mbengue is particularly firm in his stance regarding calls for his departure. He asserts that some of those now making a fuss actually benefited from Dakar Dem Dikk's support when they were experiencing social difficulties. "Those demanding my departure were themselves affected by social issues, and the company supported them. Now they're making a fuss," he denounces.
The managing director, however, refuses to be deterred from his mission. "I will remain steadfast until the very last minute I am at the helm of this company," he affirms, before reminding everyone that Dakar Dem Dikk transcends individuals: "Dakar Dem Dikk existed before Assane Mbengue, and it will continue to exist. Assane Mbengue will too."
He also recounts being approached by young workers from Yoff who wanted to form a group around him. He says he immediately rejected this approach, in order to remain "equidistant from all the workers." This stance, he believes, allows him to distance himself from certain practices he says he has witnessed in the past.
He specifically mentions the use of company buses and Dakar Dem Dik fuel for campaigning, promotions linked to political affiliations, and even agents who, according to him, did not come to work while still being paid.
Faced with this unrest, the CEO of Dakar Dem Dikk minced no words: "To those who are stirring things up, I say it's cowardice." Beyond the controversy, Assane Mbengue emphasized the efforts undertaken to strengthen the company. He stated that Dakar Dem Dikk supports its employees through training and is working towards certifying its technical workshops to meet international standards.
According to him, the company also plays a significant role in urban and intercity transportation, particularly during major events and in preparing for upcoming deadlines that require enhanced transportation infrastructure. Financially, the CEO assures that the company is continuing its process of streamlining and optimizing its resources.
“We are currently streamlining our finances and optimizing resources to guarantee jobs for our employees. We are paying our debts on time,” he maintains. On the social front, he affirms that Dakar Dem Dikk continues to support its employees. According to Assane Mbengue, despite the rumors and turmoil linked to the political context, the company's situation remains under control. “Dakar Dem Dikk is doing well,” he concludes.
