Security cooperation: The United States strengthens the mobility capabilities of the National Gendarmerie

Coopération sécuritaire : Les États-Unis renforcent les moyens de mobilité de la Gendarmerie nationale

Security cooperation between Senegal and the United States has reached a new milestone. On Friday, August 28, the National Gendarmerie received a significant donation of vehicles and spare parts from Washington. The ceremony, co-chaired by the High Commander of the National Gendarmerie and Director of Military Justice, Major General Martin Faye, and the Chargé d'affaires of the United States Embassy in Senegal, Christina Chapelle, brought together several civilian and military authorities as well as partners.

12 motorcycles and 4 all-terrain vehicles

In total, 12 Yamaha motorcycles and 4 Wolverine all-terrain vehicles, along with a significant quantity of spare parts, were delivered to the gendarmerie. This equipment is intended primarily to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Surveillance and Intervention Squadron (ESI). This program, part of a ten-year American partnership, aims to bolster Senegalese border operations and respond to terrorist threats.

Speaking at the event, the Chargé d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Senegal, Christina Chapelle, hailed this as a new step in the security partnership between Washington and Dakar. She emphasized that the equipment, acquired from the United States, will improve the mobility of Senegalese forces, particularly in areas where the terrain and long distances complicate rapid interventions. "These high-tech, high-value vehicles represent a major milestone in our partnership," she stated. She also indicated that this support reflects the United States' confidence in the Senegalese security forces, especially the Surveillance and Intervention Squadron, whose professionalism and operational capabilities she commended.

A partnership also mobilized for the Youth Olympic Games

In her remarks, Christina Chapelle also discussed cooperation between the two countries in preparation for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Senegal. She indicated that the United States had provided specialized training over the past year to strengthen operational capabilities and coordination among the various institutions responsible for the event's security.

The American diplomat said she was convinced that Senegal is "well prepared" to ensure the safety and success of this international sporting event, which will bring together thousands of young athletes.

Support for border operations

For Major General Martin Faye, this handover represents an important step in military cooperation between the two countries. He emphasized the importance of having resources adapted to the realities on the ground, particularly in border and rural areas. "The long distances, the size of rural areas, the diversity of terrain, and sometimes the difficulty of accessing certain localities require our units to have appropriate resources," he stressed.

According to the High Commander of the National Gendarmerie, the new equipment will allow units to strengthen the gendarmerie's presence on the ground, improve surveillance of sensitive areas, and increase their responsiveness to various threats. He also noted that Senegalese-American cooperation is not limited to the provision of equipment. It also includes training, exercises, advice, and the exchange of expertise.

Training at the heart of the partnership

General Martin Faye specifically mentioned the training received by the soldiers of the Surveillance and Intervention Squadrons of Rosso, Bakel and Koungheul, which focused particularly on patrols in rural border areas with the support of the US State Department's Counterterrorism Assistance Program.

For him, the combination of equipment, training, and technical support represents a real added value for security forces. "No force can act effectively alone," General Faye emphasized, stressing the need to strengthen international cooperation, the sharing of experiences, and operational capabilities in the face of diversifying threats, cross-border trafficking, and the mobility of criminal groups.

Towards enhanced cooperation

Beyond the equipment handed over, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continue and deepen their cooperation in the areas of defense and security.

General Martin Faye assured that the equipment would be used as intended, while emphasizing the importance of its maintenance to preserve its operational effectiveness. He also reiterated his thanks to the United States Embassy and all those who contributed to this donation.

Through this donation, Dakar and Washington intend to consolidate a long-standing partnership around common objectives: securing borders, fighting terrorism and cross-border crime, protecting populations and strengthening regional stability.
