Effondrement d’un immeuble à Thiès : les ouvriers dénoncent le non-respect des normes de sécurité
The collapse of a building under construction in the Sud Stade district of Thiès, which claimed the life of a worker, has sparked outrage within the construction community. Abdoulaye Dieng, president of the Thiès Region Workers' Association, is demanding a full investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy and that those responsible be brought to justice. "It is with heavy hearts that we learned of this tragedy," he declared, lamenting the loss of one of their colleagues in the building's collapse.
For him, this accident once again raises the issue of worker safety on construction and public works sites. The union representative denounces the safety measures that are too often neglected, exposing workers to major risks in the course of their work. "Every time, it's the workers who are the victims. This has to stop," he insists, calling for better protection for workers on construction sites.
Abdoulaye Dieng particularly deplores the contrast between the investments made by property owners to erect their buildings and the lack of resources allocated to worker safety. He believes that workers must benefit from working conditions that comply with current standards.
Beyond safety concerns, the president of the Thiès Region Workers' Association raises questions about the height of the collapsed building. According to information he claims to have gathered, the building permit issued was for a three-story building (ground floor + 3 floors), whereas the construction reached five stories (ground floor + 5 floors).
On this basis, he demands that the administrative status of the construction site be verified and that responsibilities be established. He also requests that the owner be prosecuted if any wrongdoing is proven.
For Abdoulaye Dieng, this tragedy should serve as a wake-up call. He calls on the government to provide more support to workers in implementing prevention and safety measures on construction sites. "Worker safety must no longer be neglected," he insists, convinced that better adherence to standards could help prevent such tragedies.
