Grand-Dakar sous les eaux usées : le maire crie à l’urgence sanitaire
Jean-Baptiste Diouf denounces a "disastrous" situation and warns of the health risks linked to the water flooding rooms and surrounding areas of homes. The mayor of Grand-Dakar states that ONAS (National Sanitation Office), contacted by municipal technical services, intervened once before leaving without returning to resolve the problem.
The sanitation situation in Grand-Dakar is reaching crisis levels. In one neighborhood of the municipality, water is flooding rooms and the areas around homes, exposing residents to alarming hygiene conditions.
Faced with this situation, the mayor, Jean-Baptiste Diouf, raised his voice and directly appealed to the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS). In a statement, the mayor described a difficult daily life for residents, forced to live with water he considers unsanitary.
“The people are living in a disastrous, calamitous situation,” he lamented, mentioning the presence of water even in their bedrooms. For the mayor, the emergency goes far beyond the inconveniences caused by the flooding of living spaces. He warned of the risks of disease and hygiene problems that could result from this situation.
"This is first and foremost a public health issue," he insists, emphasizing that residents cannot sleep normally in rooms flooded with water that "is not good at all."
The mayor is holding ONAS accountable.
While public criticism is directed primarily at the municipality, Jean-Baptiste Diouf is keen to clarify responsibilities. He reiterates that interventions on the sewer system and sanitation management fall under the purview of the ONAS (National Sanitation Office). The mayor nevertheless affirms that his teams took the necessary steps as soon as the problem was discovered.
The municipal technical department went to the site before contacting ONAS (the National Sanitation Office). According to them, the town hall has the reference number for this call. However, according to their account, the organization's initial intervention failed to resolve the situation. The agents reportedly left after observing the problems they encountered and did not return.
“The problem is that they haven’t come back, and that’s the difficulty,” says Jean-Baptiste Diouf. This situation has prompted him to make another appeal to ONAS for swift intervention.
Beyond the health risks, this failure is also disrupting the town's development projects. In the affected area, the town hall plans to resurface the streets. The necessary materials, including paving stones, sand, and gravel, are already available on site. However, the municipality cannot proceed with the project in this part of the neighborhood until the sanitation problem is resolved.
“We cannot proceed with this part until ONAS finalizes this sanitation project,” explains the mayor of Grand-Dakar. While awaiting a definitive solution, residents continue to face difficult living conditions. Jean-Baptiste Diouf is therefore calling on ONAS to take responsibility and provide an urgent response to a situation that threatens the hygiene, health, and living environment of the people of Grand-Dakar.
